Borovoe, Kazakhstan – Asian Egypt?

Borovoe is a part of the Kokshetau steppe, a mixed steppe with plains, forest and highland. The climate is extreme here, with hot summers and severe winters (as we can attest!). The area is home to several lakes of all sizes, including five on the scale of Borovoe.

We’ve enjoyed showing you the sights in this part of the world, and have put this post together about Borovoe’s granite rock formations, unique to this area and unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

If you’re unable to see the video embedded above, just click this link to view: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkwhaLBdMV8

The two most notable rock formations are Okzhetpes and Zhumbaktas. Okzhetpes literally means "inaccessible even to arrows" and has a peak that locals say resembles an elephant calf. The Zhumbaktas (“riddle stone”) formation, sits as an island in the lake, and resembles a sphinx.

We understand that most of you have had your own slice of Siberia back home! From what we’ve heard, you had a beautiful blanket of snow, and hopefully little to no ice to keep you from enjoying it. If you have pictures, we'd love to see them.

Till next time –

Dear Tonya and Steve,

What a fantastic video, thank you for taking all of us along with you! I had a "flashback" to my youth when I could hear the crunching sound when you both were moving around on the ice! Growing up in Iowa was a bit like Siberia in the winter, ice skated, ice sailed/raced, ice fished in little houses built over the frozen water and even drove on the ice! When you gave us the panoramic view I could envision all if those activities going on! Those rock formations are unbelievable and the one where arrows could not pennatrate is a funny translation, I agree! Stay warm and keep sending these informative ones... I feel a bit like ole Charles Kuralt is back among us !

I'm enjoying your beautiful photos and video and learning more about a different area of Kazakhstan than we'd visited. Tonya, I just fwd'd you a Facebook request if you'd like to take a peek at some pics of the girls playing in the snow in our backyard (see my page and they're right there at the top). They had a great time. Feels a lot like Siberia here right now. Hope you all stay warm!

Pulling from a flask? Moi??? Steve, I am shocked! Seriously, the ice fishing was fun when you caught a fish but boring....I didn't ice fish much after I was 7 or 8 and I am sure my Dad was quite glad. I do remember just staring down that hole in the ice waiting for a fish to swim by and so excited when we would catch one. Fun memories! It is funny how something as little as the sound you and Tonya were making as you walked around, that crunching sound took me back 60 years! Well, I hope you are having a good weekend and will be getting some good news this week. Take care and stay warm and stay close to the Son who sustains you.
